Artificial Intelligence or AI is the ability of machines to mimic the intelligence of human brains. This includes learning from experience, figuring out patterns, and making autonomous decisions. In order to understand this concept properly, imagine having a robot in a maze. The robot is left in the middle of the maze and then told to figure out a way to escape. With machine learning, the robot would figure out a list of possible routes, and then one by one exhaust all these possibilities, learning and gathering information from each try, and then using these experiences and the information retrieved from these events, the robot would be able to escape without the need for any human intervention.
Deep learning is the ability of machines to progressively extract higher level features from the raw input. In order to do this, artificial neural networks are used which mimic the nerves of the human brain. The idea behind deep learning is that large amounts of data, which would in other situations be useless for the average human to make sense of, is provided to these machines and then, using complex algorithms, these machines are able to extract useful information from the large unstructured data.
Big data are extremely large data sets, both structured and unstructured, that may be analyzed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behavior and interactions.
It is data that contains greater variety arriving in increasing volumes and with ever-higher velocity. These are the three Vs of big data. There is a large range of the types or variety of information which is included in big data. This information comes at a very high speed or velocity. And this data is ever-increasing in size or volume.
Where AI and Big Data meet
You might have noticed from the definition of AI and its two functions (Machine Learning and Deep Learning) that the basic underlying principle is that machines make decisions based on data. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that AI works on data. The more data you provide it, the more information the machines will have to work with, leading to more accurate decision making. This is where big data comes in. Big data is the ultimate fodder for AI to work on. The two are the perfect match for each other.
In the past, big data was data which was either discarded or ignored since there was no way to make any possible use of it with the traditional data-processing software. And AI didn’t have enough data to use for it to effectively replicate the working of the human brain. When AI and big data work together, both of their respective problems are solved and revolutionary results can be achieved.
